Summary

Two feudal kingdoms, Midland and Chuder, battle for supremacy in what will become the final clash in a century-long struggle。 Spearheading the Midland forces is the Band of the Hawk, a legendary cadre of elite mercenaries led by the charismatic Griffith and with the fearless Guts as its berserker champion。 The Hawks’ ferocity, courage, and fearsome skills – not to mention Guts’ enormous broadsword – are just what Midland needs to turn the bloody tide, but during the fray, Guts and Griffith’s most trusted lieutenant, Casca, fall together from a cliff into a raging river。 Miraculously, both barely survive, and Guts tends to Casca’s wounds as she tells of having her life saved by Griffith, her induction into the Band of the Hawk, and her deep feelings toward Griffith。 She even seems to finally be warming up to the grim Guts。 But this greeting-card moment won’t last long, for Chuder warriors are on the prowl, and the only greetings they carry are on the points of their spears!

I can't believe it's been four years since I've sat down to read Berserk。 It's been interesting to re-read volumes one through six, both simply due to the act of re-reading and because every time I mark a volume as finished here on Goodreads, it prompts me to look again over a review I wrote four years ago。 Sometimes I find myself surprised by the savviness with which I treated the material, other times I'm a little embarrassed。 But I'm sure I'll look upon whatever writing about Berserk I do now I can't believe it's been four years since I've sat down to read Berserk。 It's been interesting to re-read volumes one through six, both simply due to the act of re-reading and because every time I mark a volume as finished here on Goodreads, it prompts me to look again over a review I wrote four years ago。 Sometimes I find myself surprised by the savviness with which I treated the material, other times I'm a little embarrassed。 But I'm sure I'll look upon whatever writing about Berserk I do now with the same kind of ambivalence。At any rate, I begin with one paragraph not about Berserk volume seven and continue with another。 Returning to Miura's opus now, in the wake of his death, it doesn't feel quite right。 By this point in the story, we understand Guts far better。 He's showing shades of decency along with the determination that is so twisted in the earlier Black Swordsman arc。 And because we know the terrible tragedy that is to come, we can see how the determination to seize a dream that Guts learns from Griffith might become twisted if Griffith betrays Guts as we expect him to。 The two most interesting details about this volume for me on the first pass are the setup for the confrontation between Griffith and Gennon as well as the chapter "Bonfire of Dreams。" Addressing the former, Miura seems intent on working something out about the abuse of children。 It has never been depicted in this work without serious consequences for his characters。 Griffith tells Casca he willingly sleeps with Gennon, but we're left wondering to what extent Griffith is trying to protect the children Gennon is abusing by taking Gennon's attention away from them。 As for "Bonfire of Dreams," it's just a great chapter。 Easily my favorite in the whole manga thus far。 But we know whatever promising future Guts might think lies ahead is a fantasy。 It only gets worse。 。。。more

(Zero spoiler review)This series makes me feel like such a nit picking killjoy。 I mean, you have some of the most ball shrivelling art you will ever see。 Gratuitous violence, demons as well as a bit of sexy time now and then, and yet, all I can think about whilst reading this series is rewriting it。 About taking the imperfections with the Japanese method of storytelling and turn this very good yet flawed series into quite frankly, one of the greatest literary creations within the medium。 No, I'm (Zero spoiler review)This series makes me feel like such a nit picking killjoy。 I mean, you have some of the most ball shrivelling art you will ever see。 Gratuitous violence, demons as well as a bit of sexy time now and then, and yet, all I can think about whilst reading this series is rewriting it。 About taking the imperfections with the Japanese method of storytelling and turn this very good yet flawed series into quite frankly, one of the greatest literary creations within the medium。 No, I'm not overly arrogant or self absorbed, I just can't, as much as I try, resolve the issues I have with the manga stereotypes that even the great Kentaro Mura doesn't seem immune。 In fact, they rear their head more here than I recall them doing in volume 2。 The unnecessary comedic interference, to the detriment of the moment。 Panel after panel of nothing but empty speech bubbles, individual words, or 。。。。。。。。。 We also have a book overloaded with battle scenes。 Don't get me wrong, they look amazing for the most part, but the book truly shines during the small moments in between the big set pieces, when the plot is dragged forward, kicking and screaming。 When characters interact。 When scheming and deception reign。 The final arc of this series is by far the best in this regard。 We get quite a few little twists and small character moments, which made the previous two issues of battle weary exploits a little more worth it, but I'm still left wanting more from this mostly amazing series。 In the end, the issue of me perhaps not 'getting' with manga as much as I would like is for me to deal with。 You can't keep bating a dead horse and expect it to spring back to life or turn into a unicorn。 Berserk is wonderful in so many ways, although narratively, It frequently leaves me wanting。 4/5OmniBen。 。。。more

I just finished the golden age arc。 What can i say? I'm literally devastated。 But it was so good。 Berserk really is a work of art, and the medieval style and all of the battles they've been through makes me love this manga series even more。 I truly recommend any adult fantasy lover to read this。 I've been on a "normal book reading slump" but i think im compensating for it by reading manga。 94 chapters of pure nostalgia。 man。。。 can't wait for more。 I just finished the golden age arc。 What can i say? Pretty fun volume as we have Guts rescuing Casca and we see the emotional bonding between the two as how he loves this woman and fights a 100 men while injured to protect her so that she could get out safely and its one of the greatest things ever, pretty well done and then you have the thing with Guts and Griffith and their moments and how he wants to achieve his dream and their next target: Doldrey and we learn something from Griffith's past and how the count there wants him and this battle is Pretty fun volume as we have Guts rescuing Casca and we see the emotional bonding between the two as how he loves this woman and fights a 100 men while injured to protect her so that she could get out safely and its one of the greatest things ever, pretty well done and then you have the thing with Guts and Griffith and their moments and how he wants to achieve his dream and their next target: Doldrey and we learn something from Griffith's past and how the count there wants him and this battle is becoming intense! I can’t stress enough how much of a masterpiece this is。 Griffith is slowly becoming my favorite character as well as it’s really starting to dive into the backstory and ideas of each character。 This specific volume has more fight scenes so if you’re into that this is yours to read I love every aspect of this manga the fights are absolutely amazing looking。

This was awesome。 With Berserk。。。 one second you are literally crossing into the gates of hell, demonic possession, and exposure to the absolute worst in humanity one could imagine。 Next, you are on grassy fields with horses galloping and a love story unfolding。 Then you get to Volume 7 and you get medieval military strategy at its finest with outstand delivery。 The force on force and military strategy within this is so good, it makes me want to play an RTS (real time strategy) video game。 Absol This was awesome。 With Berserk。。。 one second you are literally crossing into the gates of hell, demonic possession, and exposure to the absolute worst in humanity one could imagine。 Next, you are on grassy fields with horses galloping and a love story unfolding。 Then you get to Volume 7 and you get medieval military strategy at its finest with outstand delivery。 The force on force and military strategy within this is so good, it makes me want to play an RTS (real time strategy) video game。 Absolutely loved it。 What a cliff hanger at the end too! No será sorpresa para mí ponerle cinco estrellas a cada volumen de Berserk。 Es tan épico que con cinco no alcanza。 Esa batalla por Doldrey, increíble。

The past is catching up in this epic battle for Griffith。 All these end on cliffhangers and keep you saying one more。

Incredibly detailed artwork, with the same-old gore and violence。 The series just keeps on giving。

This is actually a reread of one of my favorite comic books。 It's not always perfect, but I'm still very fond of it (although it has been years since my last reading)。I do remember that in both the moments from here reflected on the show (which I watched before reading the manga) and in this particular volume is where I fell in love with the manga, with all of its flaws and everything。 I love it! The Golden Age ArcA fantasticly rich, beautiful and tragic story, with some of the most amazingly written plot I can think of。 Berserk starts out with a brooding, dark avenger, with little personality left。 What get most people hooked to the story at this point, is the gore, the violence, the "I don't give a F" attitude。 If you have gotten this far, then you should know that it will change and be explained。 You will get to know why Guts is the way he is。 The story of the struggler is explained。 The Golden Age ArcA fantasticly rich, beautiful and tragic story, with some of the most amazingly written plot I can think of。 Berserk starts out with a brooding, dark avenger, with little personality left。 What get most people hooked to the story at this point, is the gore, the violence, the "I don't give a F" attitude。 If you have gotten this far, then you should know that it will change and be explained。 You will get to know why Guts is the way he is。 The story of the struggler is explained。 The 4th volume starts "The Golden Age Arc", which is so immensely good, I find it hard to describe。 The story focuses on Guts' past。 How he came to become such a badass, what his childhood was like and how he met his first, and only, friends。 It is the story of comrades, success and failures。 It is the story about hope, despair, ambition and betrayal。 The first volumes of this tale, tell us about a anti-hero。 He doesn't want to be liked and he doesn't care about life。 He lives only for revenge and hatred, and has for years。 The Golden Age Arc gives us the reasons for this。 The death and betrayal that started Guts' life and how death has followed him from he was born。He starts of with a mentor, a father and people he trusts。 He ends up alone and untrusting。 He learns to trust, learns to be a human only to experience true despair, sorrow and hatred。I envy everyone who hasn't read Berserk yet。 The whole story is such a blast that the agony of the slow releases are almost bearable。 If this is your first time reading the Golden Arc, then you will probably be blown away。 Or not。 You will probably end up reading it multiple times, and finding joy and despair all over again。 。。。more

Mucha batalla, más momento romántico del que me gustaría。 No es el mejor tomo de la edad dorada。

By far the majority of this volume is one big battle, well, two battles I guess。 As always the art is impressive for these。 Also, I love the armor in Berserk, really interesting stuff。

Actual Ratings- 2。5 The writing is just worse in general。 Casca's character goes down the drain for me。 The fighting scenes were very messy, the frame could've been adjusted a bit better。 There were some scenes at the later chapters, which were a bit more, well。。。 Scenic。 There were failed attempts at comedy throughout the book。 This volume was worse than other ones。 Actual Ratings- 2。5 The writing is just worse in general。 Casca's character goes down the drain for me。 The fighting scenes were very messy, the frame could've been adjusted a bit better。 There were some scenes at the later chapters, which were a bit more, well。。。 Scenic。 There were failed attempts at comedy throughout the book。 This volume was worse than other ones。 。。。more
